Developments in the measurement of spectral momentum densities with (e,2e) spectrometers

چکیده
The introduction of multiparameter high energy electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS) spectrometers, with high energy and momentum resolution and coincidence count rates, has made it possible to obtain detailed information on the electronic structure of condensed matter and surfaces. In particular it gives direct information on the spectral-momentum density of the material under study, which may be a single crystal, polycrystalline, or amorphous. The first such spectrometer, the Flinders University spectrometer, uses asymmetric kinematics in the measurement of the energies and momenta of the two outgoing electrons in the (e,2e) collision. The new ANU spectrometer uses symmetric kinematics and much higher energies. It is therefore less affected by deleterious multiple-scattering events. On the other hand the Flinders spectrometer is surface sensitive, whereas the ANU spectrometer is more bulk sensitive. Some aspects of EMS measurements of condensed-matter specimens and the performance of the two spectrometers are discussed. 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

High-energy „e,2e... spectrometer for the study of the spectral momentum density of materials
A new spectrometer for the study of energy-resolved momentum densities is described. The (e , 2e) spectrometer uses a symmetric configuration and uses incoming energies up to 50 keV. Energy resolution and momentum resolution are 1.8 eV and 0.1 a.u., respectively. Compared to previous spectrometers this spectrometer has rather low levels of multiple scattering, and thus allows for more quantitat...
متن کاملThe direct measurement of spectral momentum densities of silicon with high energy (e, 2e) spectroscopy
Electron momentum spectroscopy is a coincidence technique that measures the spectral momentum density of matter. In this paper we outline the theoretical framework underlying these measurements, give a description of the spectrometer, and show in detail the information this technique can provide for the prototypical material silicon. We present results for single crystals as well as amorphous s...

Recent progress in the application of the (e,2e) technique for elucidating the electronic structure of condensed matter is discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the description of a new third generation electron momentum spectrometer, which operates with an incident beam energy of 20-30 keV, uses asymmetric non-coplanar scattering kinematics with scattered electrons emerging at polar angle...

The flexibility of the (e, 2e) technique or "electron momentum spectroscopy" (EMS) in obtaining information on the electronic structure of atoms, molecules, and solids is demonstrated. Highresolution EMS measurements for argon, including the first measurements of momentum profiles belonging to the 2 P° and D-manifolds, are used to demonstrate the technique for atomic targets. The d-wave transit...
متن کاملThe Spectral Momentum Density of Aluminium, Copper and Gold Measured by Electron Momentum Spectroscopy
Electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS) gives direct information of the full energyresolved electron momentum densities of occupied states (bands) in solids – single crystal, polycrystalline or amorphous. Here we present data from a new high energy EMS spectrometer using 50 keV incident and 25 keV outgoing electrons, on polycrystalline specimens of aluminium, copper and gold. The spectral momentum...
